    Honey Bee Mystery

    All across the United States, honeybees are flying away from their hives and dying. Empty hives are causing a lot of worry about some important food crops.

    Bees give us a lot more than delicious honey. They are pollinators—they enable plants to produce the fruits and nuts we enjoy by carrying pollen from one plant or flower to the next. The wind pollinates oats, corn, and wheat, but many other plants (like apple and cherry trees and melon vines) depend on insects, bats, and birds.

    Animals pollinate about one out of every three bites of food we eat. And in the U.S., millions and millions of bees kept by human beekeepers fly around doing a lot of this important work for food crops.

    Professional beekeepers raise honeybees, box them up, and send them on trucks to fields where farmers grow food. Bees live in groups of about 40,000 individuals called colonies.

    California’s almond crop alone depends on about half the bees in the country, about 1.5 million colonies! The bees pollinate in the almond groves for about six weeks, and then are sent on to work other crops. But now the almond crop and many others could be in trouble with so many bees dying.

    “The colony is what we call a super-organism,” says Dr. Jeff Pettis of the Bee Research Laboratory at the U.S. Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland. “When a lot of the bees die, the whole colony is at risk.” Researchers like him at government and university labs all over the country are trying to figure out why so many bee colonies are dying.

    However, explains Pettis, bees are hard to study. Most die away from the hive, so researchers don’t have dead bodies to examine. And when researchers return to a hive after two weeks, about half the bees they studied on their first visit will be dead, replaced by new ones in the natural life cycle of bees.

    Making detective work even harder, these busy insects fly up to two miles away from their hive in search of pollen and nectar from flowers. So when bees pick up diseases or get exposed to poisons in their environment, it is hard to know exactly where that happened.

    “It isn’t like studying a large animal like a cow that doesn’t move around much and is easy to find out in the cow field,” says Pettis.

    Researchers do have some ideas about what could be affecting bee health. They could be sick from poisons widely used to kill insects, or they might not be getting enough good food to stay strong. Also, tiny insects called mites feed on bees. “Any or all of these things could be weakening the honey bees,” explains Pettis, “and then a virus or bacteria could be doing the killing.”

    Pettis is hoping for a solution, because bees are so important. “Here’s a good example of what pollinators like bees give us,” he says. “You can eat plain oatmeal every day and get by, and oats are pollinated by the wind. But if you want to add some blueberries or strawberries or nuts to your daily oatmeal, those are the things you have to thank pollinators for. Bees are worth protecting because their work adds so much to our diet.”

    Dalam satu kisah percintaan yang menarik. Sepasang suami isteri berjalan di tepi sebuah tasik yang indah. Kemudian mereka berhenti di sebuah bangku yang disediakan di tepi tasik. Kemudian si isteri bertanya kepada si suami. Ini dialog mereka…

    Isteri: Mengapa abang menyukai saya? Mengapa abang cintakan saya?

    Suami: Abang tidak boleh menerangkan sebabnya, namun begitu abang memang menyayangi dan mencintai Sayang!

    Isteri: Abang tak boleh terangkan sebabnya? Bagaimana abang boleh katakan abang sayang dan cintakan saya sedangkan abang tidak boleh menerangkannya.

    Suami: Betul! Abang tak tahu sebabnya tetapi abang boleh buktikan bahawa abang memang cintakan Sayang!

    Isteri: Tak boleh beri bukti! Tidak! Saya hendak abang terangkan kepada saya sebabnya. Kawan-kawan saya yang lain yang mempunyai suami dan teman lelaki, semuanya tahu menerangkan mengapa mereka mencintai. Dalam bentuk puisi dan syair lagi. Namun begitu abang tidak boleh terangkan sebabnya

    Si suami menarik nafas panjang dan dia berkata

    “Baiklah! Abang mencintai Sayang sebab sayang cantik, mempunyai suara yang merdu, penyayang dan mengingati abang selalu. Abang juga sukakan senyuman manis dan setiap tapak Sayang melangkah, di situlah cinta Abang bersama Sayang!”

    Si isteri tersenyum dan berpuas hati dengan penerangan suaminya tadi. Namun begitu selang beberapa hari si isteri mengalami kemalangan dan koma.

    Si suami amat bersedih dan menulis sepucuk surat kepada isterinya yang disayangi. Surat itu diletakkan di sebelah katil isterinya di hospital. Surat tersebut berbunyi begini:

    “Sayang!

    Jika disebabkan suara aku mencintai mu… sekarang bolehkah engkau bersuara? Tidak! Oleh itu aku tidak boleh mencintai mu.

    Jika disebabkan kasih sayang dan ingatan aku mencintai mu…sekarang bolehkah engkau menunjukkannya? Tidak! Oleh itu aku tidak boleh mencintai mu.

    Jika disebabkan senyuman aku mencintai mu… sekarang bolehkah engkau tersenyum? Tidak! Oleh itu aku tidak boleh mencintai mu.

    Jika disebabkan setiap langkah aku mencintai mu…. sekarang bolehkah engkau melangkah? Tidak! Oleh itu aku tidak boleh mencintai mu.

    Jika cinta memerlukan sebabnya, seperti sekarang. Aku tidak mempunyai sebab mencintai mu lagi.

    Adakah cinta memerlukan sebab? Tidak! Aku masih mencintai mu dulu, kini, selamanya dan cinta tidak perlu ada sebab. Kadangkala perkara tercantik dan terbaik di dunia tidak boleh dilihat, dipegang. Namun begitu… ia boleh dirasai dalam hati.”

    taktik memikat kaum adam..huhu

    Sebelum seseorang itu berkapel, sudah semestinya mesti ada salah sorang tu yang akan cuba memikat kan? Mesti ada orang yang akan memulakan dulu dalam bab-bab berkapel ni. Jadi di sini, saya ingin berkongsi dengan korang semua cara-cara bila seseorang itu cuba memikat diri kita.

    1. Mula-mula, mesti la dia akan mintak no phone kita kan. Tapi nak mintak tu kadang-kadang, ada yang mintak terus dari kita. Ada yang mintak secara underground (maksudnyA, mintak dari kawan-kawan kita la). Tak pun, menggunakan “intelligence” untuk mendapatkan no phone kitatu.

    2. Selepas dah dapat no phone, apa lagi, dia mula buat-buat salah hantar mesej la, tersalah call la. Then siap tanya ni no sape, etc. Padahal dia yang start dulu kan? Tak ke pelik tu.

    3. Dia akan selalu mesej kita. Tanyakan khabar, dah makan belum, dah mandi ke, etc. Then if tak puas lagi, die akan mesej-mesej dengan kita sehingga la pukul 2, 3 pagi. Dalam ngantuk-ngantuk tu pun boleh kata mata masih segar lagi.

    4. Dah tu pulak, dah penat-penat nak mesej, dia akan terus call kita. Konon cakap kredit banyak sangat sampai provider nak potong line dorang. Tapi sebenarnye, nak dengar suara kita sebelum die tido. Nak hilangkan rindu la katakan. Even masa tu kita still rasa takde pape lagi.

    5. Then, tibe-tibe dia akan ajak kita keluar. Keluar gi makan ke, keluar teman die belikan barang-barang dapur ke, ape ke. Memang pandai dorang ni dalam bab-bab mengajak keluar. Siap kalau takde kereta tu, sanggup pergi pinjam kereta kawan or sewa kereta.

    6. Dah tu pulak, bile dah lama berkenalan, mula la dah tukar pulak status panggilan dalam mesej. Bucuk-Comot la, Sayang-Abang la, Mama-Papa la, dan macam-macam lagi la panggilan. Tapi rasa-rasa, Mama-Papa tu selalu orang guna selepas declare or dah lama kapel.

    7. Dari situ pulak, mula la start mesej-mesej nakal. Konon-konon nak bermanja la tu. Even ada yang berkongsi masalah dan sama-sama fikirkan macam mana nak setelkan masalah tersebut. Dalam masalah pun, dia still nak buat lawak untuk bagi kita happy.

    8. Dan akhir sekali, sekiranya dia betul-betul nak pikat kita dia akan approch kita. Tak tahu la spot mana dia nak amik sebagai tempat dia nak mendeclare tu. Ada yang dalam telefon je, ada yang jumpa terus, ada yang sanggup datang malam-malam coz nak bersaksikan bulan ke, ape ke. Tapi if dia betul-betul suka pada kita, dia akan cakap yang dia nak menjadikan kita sebagai pasangan hidup dia.

    Namun begitu, tak semua yang akan berakhir dengan kegembiraan. Ada yang apa yang kita harapkan, tidak menjadi. Tapi apa salahnya. Even dia tidak menjadi milik kita, kita still boleh berkawan dengan dia kan kan?
